One Fish, Two Fish

My son recently came home from school quite hungry in spite of having his school lunch card quite full. It seems there was nothing vegetarian on the menu that day. When he complained about being offered fish, the lunch staff replied “Fish is vegetarian!” Really??? Since when did fish grow on trees? Or even on kelp for that matter??? I grew up with this odd way of thinking prevalent in my community. An uncle of mine who ran marathons at the time was reported to have “gone vegetarian” so he only ate fish & chicken. REALLY???!!! I have yet to find chicken seeds or fish tree saplings at my local nursery. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think so.

Currently popular is the idea that eating fish is eating healthy. You get your Omegas from fish! And somehow in our quest to eat a healthy, plant based diet sea food, whether of the finned or shelled variety is touted as being a part of this. Um, when did clams grow on bushes? Or shrimp sprout from the ground? Did I miss a memo somewhere that removed all aquatic creatures from the order Animalia? And what of the effects of eating from this order like high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.?

I know there are many people who hold the belief that eating fish is somehow healthier than eating land critters, but this is a marketing ploy by the fishing industry, not actual fact. “But,” you protest, “we need those great Omega fat thingies, don’t we???” Well, yes we most certainly do. Here’s the kicker: you can get them in abundance without ever having to get wet. You can get your Omega-3s the same place as fish: from plants! No fish, no foul.

Fish aren’t any healthier than any other animal should you choose to knosh on their bodies. Shrimp is higher in cholesterol than steak & a study published in 2007 in the American Journal of Cardiology reported that there is zero improvement in heart health from eating aquatic animal life nor does it prevent heart disease. Aside from the polluted waters fish live in, the mercury collected in their tissues & the lack of a heart health bonus for all this trouble, you may as well go ahead & skip the fish dish.

Plants are & always will be the best option, the best fit for human consumption. And you don’t have to miss those great flavors you love just because there aren’t any bits of animals on your plate. Plants can provide you with every flavor you can imagine & some you’ve never allowed yourself to dare dream & all with no dangerous side effects. The REAL health food comes from soil & sun with no middle processing. Give it a whirl & experience the Power of the Plants for yourself!
